What Makes a Shadow Board?
OSAAP America stocks and constructs our Shadow Boards from the purest polyethylene foams manufactured. Below is more information on the foams and their characteristics.
Standard Foam
OSAAP America exclusively uses Zotefoam products because they are the purest polyethylene foams manufactured in the world today.
AZOTE is the group brand name for Zotefoams’ closed cell, cross-linked polyolefin foams… high quality foams from differing base polymers but all manufactured using the same unique nitrogen expansion process route. You can find a more detailed description of our proprietary manufacturing processes here . AZOTE was used formerly as a name for Nitrogen and is still used by French chemists to refer to the element. AZOTE foams derive many of their exceptional properties directly from the use of this inert, tasteless, odorless gas in the manufacturing process.
We use Zotefoams’ Plastazote® family of products. Plastazote foams are engineered to offer superior performance and lighter weight. The absence of any chemical agents in the foam and a consistency of cell structure and density allows Zotefoams to offer the world’s lightest cross-linked foams. The lack of any chemical agents allows Plastazote to withstand destructive materials such at Skydrol which is used throughout the aerospace industry.
Our standard foam for Industrial applications is Zotefoam LD45 which is a closed cell/cross linked polyethylene foam. We stock material with a 3mm to 5mm black top layer and a colored bottom layer: Blue, Red, Green, Yellow, and Grey. These combinations are stocked in 30mm, 60mm and , 90mm thick. We strive for 48 hr. shipments, after design approval, when customers use our standard industrial grade foam.
Zotefoam is closed cell and cross linked polyethylene foam: This means the material does not absorb moisture and can be cleaned in a part cleaner or with aggressive solvents.

Plasticore
OSAAP PlasticCore® is a versatile multi-color engravable high-density polyethylene sheet with multiple layers of contrasting colors.
It is a superior homogeneous sheet, a product of a unique state-of-the-art continuous process called Polyfusion, and manufactured to the highest standards in the industry.
PlastiCore® has a matte finish on both sides of the sheet. It is environmentally stabilized to withstand the harshest outdoor conditions.
PlasticCore® will not rust, delaminate or rot when exposed to UV, humidity or water.
PlasticCore® is made with a high-impact-resistant polymer to handle more abuse than conventional sign materials.
Its thin cap layers and bright primary colors make it ideal for signage, marine, playground, and recreational applications.
The polymer sheet never needs painting or refinishing. The material is easy to engrave and machine, as the cap is approximately .050” thick.
